Samsung Workers End Strike

The month-long indefinite strike by Samsung India Electronics Ltd employees at its facility close here was called off on Tuesday, and the workers have decided to return to work, according to the Tamil Nadu government.

The state government announced in a statement that the strike at the Korean electronics giant’s factory in Sriperumbudur has ended and that all workers will return to work.

About 1,100 of Samsung India’s 1,750 employees have been on strike since September 9, demanding wage increases, better working conditions, and the registration of the newly established Samsung India Workers Union, which is supported by CITU and the labor department.

The decision to call off the strike was taken at the conciliatory meeting which was held at the office of the Department of Labour Welfare here on Tuesday in which representatives from the Samsung India and the striking workers took part.

“All the striking workers will call off the agitation and return to work immediately. On returning to work the management will not victimise the workers for having participated in the protest,” an official release said.
