India Withdraws High Commissioner from Canada

India withdrew its High Commissioner and other targeted diplomats and staff from Canada on Monday, October 14, in the midst of the ongoing acrimonious dispute.

Following the Ministry of External Affairs’ summons of Stewart Wheeler, the Canadian Charge Affaires, the decision was made.

According to the Indian government, the decision was made because it no longer trusted the Justin Trudeau administration.

“We have no faith in the current Canadian Government’s commitment to ensure their security. Therefore, the Government of India has decided to withdraw the High Commissioner and other targeted diplomats and officials,” read a statement by the ministry.

“It was underlined that in an atmosphere of extremism and violence, the Trudeau Government’s actions endangered their safety,” it added.

The government also told Wheeler that New Delhi “reserves the right to take further steps in response to the Trudeau Government’s support for extremism, violence and separatism against India”.
