Israel Demands Evacuation of Southern Lebanese Villages

Israel issued eviction orders for 23 communities in southern Lebanon on Saturday, October 12, 2024, amid a continuing armed battle with Hezbollah, which is based in Lebanon.

These villages are located north of the Awali River.

In a message addressed to the villagers, Israeli military spokesman Avichay Adraee posted on X: “Urgent statement to the residents of # _ To the residents of the following villages: Aita al-Shaab, Ramyeh, Yater, Qawzah, Beit Lif, Hanin, Rshaf, Ainta, Qlaila, Al-Hawsh, Nabaa, Tulin, Al-Tamriya, Al-Khiyam, Al-Kharba, Kfar Hamam, Arab Al-Luwaizeh, Abu Zebla Bridge, Jabal Al-Adas, Dahr Bariyeh Jaber, Kafra, Ramadiyeh, Zebqin. Hezbollah’s activity forces the IDF to take action against it. The IDF does not seek to harm you. For your own safety, you must evacuate your homes immediately. Anyone who is near Hezbollah elements, facilities or weapons is putting his life at risk. Residents, you are requested to leave your homes and move immediately to the north of the Awali River. To ensure your safety, you must evacuate without delay. Warning: You are prohibited from heading south, as any movement towards the south poses a danger to your life. We will inform you when you can return home when the conditions are right.”

The IDF has said that evacuation of the villages was necessary for the safety of residents due to increased Hezbollah activities as it claimed that the group is using sites to conceal weapons and launch attacks on Israel.

Hezbollah has denied the charge.

The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah started in October 2023 after the Iranian-backed group began launching rockets at northern Israel in support of Hamas at the start of the Gaza war. The conflict has now snowballed into a fierce combat, especially since the assassinations of Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah.

The Lebanese government has said that due to the intensified Israeli attacks in southern Lebanon, the Bekaa Valley and the southern suburbs of Beirut, approximately 1.2 million people were forced to leave their homes since September 23.

This number is much higher than during the last major armed conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in 2006. This information was shared by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said on Saturday, 12 October 2024.

Hezbollah, on Saturday said that it launched a drone attack on a military base in Haifa, north Israel on Friday, October 11. In a statement the group said its fighters were “targeting the explosives factory there with a salvo of missiles”.
