Jasprit Bumrah Reclaims No.1 Spot

Jasprit Bumrah has regained the No.1 spot in the ICC Test rankings for bowlers, overtaking his teammate Ravichandran Ashwin. This development happened after the sensational two match Test series against Bangladesh where he picked up 11 wickets.

Bumrah bowled 49 overs in the two test matches against Bangladesh and picked up 11 wickets sharing the joint highest alongside Ashwin. Bumrah’s bowling average was of 12.82, which was much better than the veteran Indian spinner.

Jasprit Bumrah first topped the rankings in February 2024, during the India vs England Test series, when he replaced R Ashwin. Back then, Bumrah had risen three positions to become the top-ranked bowler. He became the first Indian pacer to be named the top Test bowler. Before Bumrah, Kapil Dev was India’s highest-ranked pacer on the retrospective Test bowlers’ rankings. The former India captain was ranked second from December 1979 to February 1980.

Apart from Bumrah, Zaheer Khan has also occupied the No. 3 spot, in October-November 2010.

Ravichandran Ashwin himself had an outstanding series with the ball. During the two-match series against Bangladesh, the spinner took 11 wickets and hit a century with the bat. Ashwin is only one point behind Bumrah in the Test bowlers’ rankings and is anticipated to give the pacer a tough competition in the coming months, with India scheduled to play New Zealand at home and Australia away.

Bumrah is now the leading wicket-taker in Tests this year. Bumrah has 38 wickets and a strike rate of 14.42 since the beginning of 2024. Sri Lanka spinner Prabath Jayasuriya also has 38 wickets, but he has a significantly higher strike rate than the Indian pace bowler.
