The appointment of Vice Admiral Arti Sarin as the next Director General of the Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS) took place on Tuesday. She is the highest senior female officer to have ever served in the Indian Armed Forces and the first woman to assume leadership of the Tri-service Armed Forces Medical Services.
Regarding general medical policy topics pertaining to the Armed Forces, the Ministry of Defence holds direct responsibility over the DGAFMS.
Commissioned in 1985, Vice Admiral Sarin graduated from the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune. She has two postgraduate degrees in Radiodiagnosis and Radiation Oncology and is trained in gamma knife surgery.
She has spent her career in a number of important roles. She has held the position of Director General of Medical Services in the Indian Air Force and Navy. In addition to serving as the Command Medical Officer of the Southern Naval Command (SNC) and the Western Naval Command (WNC), Vice Admiral Sarin has headed two significant units: INHS Asvini and AFMC.
A supporter of encouraging young women to enlist in the military, she was most recently named by the Supreme Court to the National Task Force, which is tasked with creating safe working conditions and procedures for medical professionals.She has spent her career in a number of important roles.
