The Indian Railways plans to run 12,500 additional coaches to accommodate the expected surge in travellers during the Chhath Puja and Diwali this festive season.
To enhance travel convenience, the Railways has increased the number of general coaches across 108 trains, ensuring that more people could celebrate the festivities with their loved ones. Announcing the developments on Friday, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that 5,975 special trains have been notified for the 2024-25 season, facilitating travel for over one crore passengers during this busy period. Last year, 4,429 special trains operated during the festivities, reflecting a steady increase in services to meet passenger demand.
The minister highlighted the pride of indigenous manufacturing. “Vande Bharat was made when the prime minister had confidence in the railway engineers.” He shared that multiple versions of the Vande Bharat train, including the new Namo Bharat train and sleeper coaches, are now being manufactured domestically, moving away from reliance on foreign imports.

Earlier this year, in July, the government had run over 300 special trains to and from Puri, Odisha, to accommodate the influx of pilgrims for the Jagannath Rath Yatra, further demonstrating the Indian Railways’ commitment to supporting passenger needs during major events.
