The 50th film of Dhanush, Raayan, grossed ₹50 crore at the Indian box office within just five days. The film had witnessed a slight fall in its earnings on Tuesday but still managed to garner an estimated ₹4.5 crores to bring its total collection in India to ₹52.95 crore.
Raayan, which released on July 26, opened well with ₹13.65 crore on the first day. The film raked in ₹13.75 crore on the second day while on the third day, the number stood at ₹15.25 crore. On the fourth day, collections came down a bit and Raayan collected ₹5.8 crore. On Tuesday, that is on the fifth day, it was being reported that the film stably stayed at an occupancy of 22.48% in the major territory of Tamil Nadu and thus continued to find audiences, even in the middle of the week.
The film, in which Dhanush had doubled up as an actor and director, received mixed to positive responses from fans and critics. The movie’s success was also noted by Telugu star Mahesh Babu, who felt that it was a great performance put forth by Dhanush as an actor and as a director, with some powerful performances by the rest of the cast like SJ Suryah, Prakash Raj, among others. Mahesh Babu’s tweet also pointed out the electrifying score by AR Rahman and termed Raayan as a must-watch.
Dhanush, who celebrates his 41st birthday two days after the release of Raayan, thanked his fans and said that the success was the best birthday present ever. The movie also stars Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, Saravanan, Sundeep Kishan, Kalidas Jayaram, and Dushara Vijayan in key roles. He would next feature in Ilaiyaraaja by Arun Matheswaran based on the life of the legendary music composer of the same name.
