Mahesh Bhatt, a veteran filmmaker, has formally confirmed that he will no longer direct films. With nearly 50 films under his belt, Bhatt cites changing times and a personal shift in focus as the reasons for his retirement from directing. Despite his successful career, Bhatt believes he is no longer in tune with the modern cinema industry.
Bhatt’s most recent directorial endeavour was “Sadak 2,” which starred his daughter Alia Bhatt. The film was a sequel to his 1991 success “Sadak” and was released in 2020, however it received mixed reviews. After “Sadak 2,” Bhatt chose to move away from directing, reinforcing his previous decision to stop after the 1999 film “Kartoos.”
In a recent interview, Bhatt stressed that his current priority is teaching emerging filmmakers rather than directing. He considered this time as the “most gratifying” of his life, finding joy in inspiring others to make art. Reflecting on his career and the growth and fall of his production business Vishesh Films, Bhatt emphasized the company’s early success, which was known for its low-budget, high-concept films. However, he acknowledged that changing audience tastes and commercial realities contributed to their loss in success.
Calling himself an ‘extinct volcano’, Bhatt said he knows so much and has a huge body of information. “However, I don’t have the thirst to leave my footprints on the sands of time, which is paramount in the entertainment world. Those who make it, have an insatiable thirst to leave their footprints on the sands of time. Vikram has it, Avika has it, I am outdated, a has-been,” said Mahesh Bhatt.
Despite taking a step back, Bhatt remains involved in the industry as a mentor, enjoying cultivating fresh talent and sharing his extensive expertise.
