Gautam Gambhir, the new head coach of the Indian cricket team, has stated that there are no issues between him and Virat Kohli. He explained that their past confrontations during IPL games were just part of the sport’s competitive nature, and both players want to win for their teams. “I share a good relationship with Virat,” Gambhir said, noting that their relationship is not for public display but is between two mature individuals.
Gambhir emphasized that any past incidents will not affect their work for the Indian team. “On the field, everyone has the right to fight for their own jersey and come back to a winning dressing room. But now, we’re representing India, representing 140 crore Indians, and we will work together to make India proud,” he said. He also mentioned that he has had many conversations with Kohli, both before and after his appointment as coach.
Regarding Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s future, Gambhir said it’s up to the players how long they continue. He believes both still have a lot to offer and are world-class players. Gambhir praised Kohli as a thorough professional and a world-class athlete.
Gambhir addressed the importance of managing the workload of fast bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah. He clarified that while he wants batters like Kohli and Rohit to play as many games as possible, it’s crucial to keep Bumrah fresh for important matches. “Workload management for someone like Bumrah is important. For a batter, if they can play consistently and are in good form, they should play all the games,” he said.
As head coach, Gambhir aims to create a happy and secure environment for the team. He believes in giving players the freedom to perform without complicating things. “A happy dressing room is a winning dressing room,” he stated.
Gambhir also discussed the upcoming challenges, including 10 Test matches in the next five to six months. He is excited about the opportunities and hopes the team performs well. He mentioned the importance of players like Ravindra Jadeja in these matches.
For the Sri Lanka tour, Gambhir confirmed his support staff, which includes Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate as assistant coaches, T Dilip as fielding coach, and Sairaj Bahutule as bowling coach.
