According to sources, the government called an all-party conference on July 21 in advance of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, which begins on Monday.
If Rahul Gandhi, the Congress MP and Leader of the Opposition, shows up for the traditional session-evening meeting of floor leaders from all parties, it will be his first time.
Sources close to the Trinamool Congress indicated that since the party observes July 21 as Martyrs Day, no party representatives will be present at the meeting.
Martyr’s Day is celebrated on July 21 in remembrance of the thirteen Congress supporters who were killed by firing shots fired by the Kolkata Police in 1993 during a march to the state headquarters, Writers Buildings, during the Left Front’s (headed by the CPI(M)) rule in West Bengal.
Even after the Trinamool Congress was formed on January 1, 1998, Mamata Banerjee, the state president of the Youth Congress at the time, kept celebrating the day with an annual rally.
The Monsoon Session of Parliament is scheduled to begin on July 22 and will conclude on August 12. The Budget will be presented on July 23.
