Cholera Outbreak in India: Cases Emerge in Gujarat and Kerala

Rajkot, Gujarat: With the monsoon season in full swing, India has been plagued by a cholera outbreak. According to recent reports, new cases have come to the fore in Gujarat and Kerala.

In Gujarat, reports of two cases of cholera have washed up; a radius of 2 km in Rajkot has been declared a cholera-affected area under the Epidemic Diseases Act on July 5. The Rajkot Municipal Corporation said, “The infection is suspected to have originated from contaminated water brought from outside.” As precautionary measures, the civic body has banned the manufacturing of all ice-based food items until September 4.

Base cases of two confirmed and 22 more showing similar symptoms have been reported in Kerala. Authorities suspect that the 22 people could be suffering from this acute diarrheal infection caused by Vibrio cholerae bacteria. The common symptoms are acute diarrhea, frequent vomiting, and dehydration. Cholera is lethal if not treated in time.

Officials in Rajkot believe that the infection could have entered the city from water kept in their houses for storing fish brought from other places. This contaminated water could be behind the two cases reported.

While this saga unfolds, the district health authorities impress on people the need for vigilance, timely intervention by the doctor, and strict hygienic practices to prevent this infection.
