India entered into the semi-finals of T20 World Cup 2024 with a 24-run win over Australia in their final Super Eight match at St Lucia. The victory in Group 1 took India to 6 points, a mark that neither of Australia or Afghanistan or Bangladesh could reach.
Talking about the game, Rohit Sharma scored 92 runs off 41 balls with the help of 7 fours and 8 sixes as India posted a total of 205 for 5 in 20 overs. In the chase, Travis Head (76 off 43) and Mitchell Marsh (37 off 28) kept Australia going but once the duo departed, India dominated the game.
It has been raining sixes from Rohit Sharma. He slog swept pacer Pat Cummins for a mighty 100-metre six and in the follow-up the actual rain arrived. The players ran back to the dugout and the covers came on.
With the biggie that Rohit hit on the first ball of the over, the Indian captain achieved the glory of 200 sixes in T20I cricket. He is the first-ever batter to achieve the feat. Rohit also scored his fifty in 19 balls. He got there on the final ball of the over.Â
It is only 10 overs in the game and Rohit Sharma is batting on 89 off 37 balls. He is really close to a record-extending 6th T20I century. Currently, both Rohit and Glenn Maxwell hold the top spot with 5 T20I centuries each. 12 runs came off the Marcus Stoinis over.
A breakthrough for India after a long time. And that is a sensational catch from Axar Patel at deep on the leg side. He timed his jump to perfection to the take the catch well inside the boundary line. Kuldeep Yadav provides India the wicket. Marsh is gone for 37 off 28 balls.
Kuldeep Yadav has bowled out Glenn Maxwell and Australia are in trouble now. They need 78 runs in 41 balls. Maxwell walked out of his crease to hit Kuldeep for a biggie but the left-arm spinner beautifully outfoxed him and rattled his stumps.Â
Australia need 51 runs in 16 balls and India are right in control of the game. Australia need to win this game to make themselves in strong contention for a semi-final spot. If they lose, it will provide a huge opportunity to Afghanistan.
Given that Australia failed to chase down the target in 15.3 overs, their net run rate now could not get over India’s even if they win this game and equal the Rohit Sharma-led side on four points. This means that India have qualified for the semi-finals, irrespective of the result of this game.
