Weather Warning: IMD Issues Orange and Yellow Alerts Across Multiple States

With temperatures crossing the 40-degree Celsius mark, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Punjab and Haryana and a yellow alert for Chandigarh, warning people that temperatures could further soar, especially on May 18 and 19.

The Met department in Chandigarh has issued an orange alert for the southern parts of Punjab and Haryana, warning of a “severe heat wave”, and a yellow alert for Chandigarh, predicting “heatwave conditions”. An orange alert means that people should “be prepared” and a yellow alert indicates that people should “be updated”.

“The maximum temperature is expected to touch 46 degrees on May 18 and 19,” Shivender Singh, a scientist from IMD.

The heat wave alert comes at a time when Chandigarh recorded a maximum temperature of 41 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, 3.5 degrees above normal. The temperature is predicted to cross 44 degrees Celsius over the weekend. On Wednesday, Mohali recorded a maximum temperature of 40.9 degrees Celsius and Panchkula, 39.8 degrees Celsius.

The maximum temperature in Haryana’s Nuh touched 43.8 degrees Celsius on Wednesday and Sirsa, 43.7 degrees Celsius.

In Punjab, the highest maximum temperature was recorded at Pathankot (42.7 degrees Celsius), followed by Bathinda (42.6 degrees Celsius) and Patiala (42.4 degrees Celsius).
