Govt Reveals High Vacancy Rates: 44% Engineering, 32% MBA..!

More than 44% of the seats in the state’s engineering institutions, including those that are self-financed, or more than 62,000 seats, were unfilled in 2023, the Gujarat government informed the legislative assembly on Thursday.

The data presented in the House also indicated that more than 32%, or 7,742 seats, of Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Computer Application (MCA) courses were unfilled in the previous year.

Responding to a set of questions raised by Congress MLAs during the Question Hour on Thursday about the vacant seats in colleges offering technical and professional courses, state Higher and Technical Education Minister Rushikesh Patel said various government-run, grant-in-aid, and self-financed colleges have 1,40,852 seats for engineering degree and diploma courses in Gujarat.

He stated that out of these 1,40,852 seats, 71,629 are for degree engineering courses and 69,223 are for diploma engineering.

The minister informed the House that 78,540 seats (55.76%) were filled last year, while 62,311 seats (44.23%) of these degree and certificate courses were unfilled.

According to Patel, a total of 38,811 degree engineering seats and up to 23,501 diploma engineering seats were empty in 2023.

Some of the reasons mentioned by the minister for this circumstance include a low number of registrations compared to available seats, as well as students seeking admission to prominent engineering colleges in India and overseas, such as IIT and NIT.

Since passing Class 10 is the entry requirement for diploma institutions, seats stay unfilled as students decide to study in Class 11 or pursue other degrees like as IIT and nursing, according to Patel’s written response.

According to the data presented in the House, 32.54 percent, or 7,742, of the total 23,791 seats for MBA and MCA courses were vacant, while 16,049 seats (67.45 percent) were filled last year.

A total of 7,481 MCA seats and 16,310 MBA seats are available at various universities, both public and private.

Of those 7,742 vacant seats, 4,675 seats were of MBA while 3,067 seats were of MCA. Patel said seats remain vacant because instead of choosing MBA or MCA, students go for other courses after finishing their graduation or they take up a job or other profession.
