The UGC has recommended institutions to select an ombudsman within 30 days of its notice on April 12, 2023. Following the UGC notice, the higher education authority issued further reminders, including a notification on December 5, 2023, mandating the appointment of an ombudsman by the end of 2023.

The list includes state universities like Delhi Teachers’ University, BR Ambedkar University, Indira Gandhi Technical University for Women, Kerala’s APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University, Tamil Nadu’s Anna University, and West Bengal’s Jadavpur University, among others. In all, there are 256 state institutions, including North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), a central university in Meghalaya is also included in the UGC list.

The list also includes reputable legal institutions such as the National legal School of India University (NLSIU) in Bengaluru, Maharashtra National Law University in Mumbai, and Nagpur.

According to the UGC guidelines, each university and its associated institutions are required to publish the ombudsperson’s and students’ grievance redressal committee’s (SGRC) contact information on their websites and prominently on campus.
