Protests Erupt in Delhi as Student Outfits Opposed to NEP 2020

Sixteen student wings associated with the Opposition’s INDIA group called for a demonstration at Jantar Mantar against the New Education Policy, alleging commercialization and commercialization of education.

These student associations have banded together under the name of ‘United Students of India’ to protest the National Education Policy, 2020. Around 16 student organizations have planned for massive rallies in New Delhi and Chennai on February 1 as part of their opposition to the new policy.

The alliance consists of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), the All India Students’ Association (AISA), the All India Students’ Federation (AISF), the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), the Chhatra Yuva Sangharsh Samiti (CYSS), the Aam Aadmi Party’s student wing, and other tribal and Dravidian student political organizations.

While speaking to India Today TV, Aishe Ghosh, SFI leader and JNUSU President, said, “Funds spent by the government are not sufficient. Government schools are closing, colleges are in bad shape, and the academic condition is worsening.”

“The pandemic has brought the worst conditions for students, and it has decreased financial assistance. This protest is against the anti-student policies of India,” Ghosh added.

Students from numerous colleges and institutions participated in the demonstration, some hoisting their individual outfit flags and others carrying the Tricolour. The United Students of India had planned a march to Parliament, but Jantar Mantar was eventually picked as the protest location.

The partnership of opposition student organizations is consistent with the recent creation of the Opposition Parties’ bloc INDIA. According to a statement released by the United Students of India, “the attack on quality education in India is scaling dangerous heights under the current BJP-led union government.”

Many students from regional parties like the DMK, RLD, RJD, JDU, and SP were present at the protest venue.

Other student outfits that are part of the front include: CRJD, DMK Student Wing, DSF, PSF, and RLD Chattra Sabha, Samajwadi Chattra Sabha, AISB, and Tribal Students.
