The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) and Deakin University, Australia, have announced the formation of the ‘IIT Madras Deakin University Research Academy’ to collaborate on global research projects, provide joint supervision, award scholarships to deserving students, and nurture talented research scholars from SAARC and ASEAN countries.
The research academics will pioneer solutions in areas of strategic relevance to Australia and India, such as clean energy, critical technologies, sustainability, climate change, healthcare technology, and more, therefore contributing to both countries’ global socioeconomic goals.
Building on nearly a decade of partnership between Deakin University and IIT Madras, the research academy will provide a four-year collaborative PhD program with high-value scholarships, joint supervision by professors from both institutions, and access to world-class research facilities.
The research academy will also provide participation in an open innovation ecosystem and research network, as well as opportunities to collaborate with leading industry partners in India and Australia.
It will work to build an ecosystem that not only nurtures future talent but also promotes new research through industrial partnerships. This research has the potential to affect policy and decision-making at the bilateral and international levels.
The four-year joint PhD course is designed to give worldwide doctorate training opportunities for early-stage researchers, with 30 scholarships awarded in 2024 to scholars from both IIT Madras and Deakin University as part of this dynamic collaboration. Furthermore, the inclusion of provisions for post-doctoral fellows and academics to spend time at each other’s institutes promises to further enrich knowledge sharing and collaboration.
The academy, led by Deakin University and IIT Madras, will establish a network of academic and industry research partners. The four-year program will provide exceptional worldwide doctorate training opportunities for early-stage scholars. It will provide researchers with cross-sectoral skills and experiences that will help them form international partnerships and begin their research careers.
