The Haryana Police have filed a FIR against an OP Jindal University lecturer for allegedly “outraging the modesty” of female students by presenting them phony dating profiles on a dating app.
Renu Bhatia, chairperson of the Haryana Women’s Commission, filed the FIR.
During a gender lesson, the professor, Sameena Dalwai, reportedly showed students several dating profiles.
Bhatia filed a complaint with Sonipat police after a video of the lecture was uploaded on social media.
She claimed in her lawsuit that Dalwai violated female students’ modesty, infringed their privacy, and created phony identities, and that “students were allegedly forced to impersonate others on dating apps.”
Previously, Bhatia stated that a faculty member’s usage of a dating app and obscene content to violate students’ privacy and dignity constituted to harassment.
Speaking to The Indian Express, Anjoo Mohun, the Chief Communication Officer at the varsity, said, “We will follow the next steps as required by the authorities. Nothing is in place as of now as to what exactly is going to be the next step, but authorities have our cooperation.”
According to the complainant, she wanted to flag “a serious incident that outraged the modesty of female students as well as the unauthorised and fraudulent use of a dating app —Bumble profile-ID by a professor in the class that exhibited several profiles of female students during such activity.”
“Professor Sameena… admitted in her reply to show-cause notice to the Vice Chancellor ‘how to open a new account’ that she was involved in the creation of accounts. Shockingly, the video testimonies provided by students to the HSCW Chairperson further corroborate her admission… This revelation unveils a disturbing pattern of coercion, as students were allegedly forced into impersonating others…,” the complaint added.
The Haryana Women’s Commission had sent a show-cause notice to Dalwai regarding the lecture at the university, after which the VC issued a letter of warning, stating her “actions have clearly undermined the university’s spirit”.
