CRPF Director General to Lead Investigation into Lok Sabha Security Breach

In response to a significant security breach in the Lok Sabha, the Union home ministry has ordered an inquiry into the incident, placing Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) director general Anish Dayal Singh at the helm of the investigation. The breach occurred during the Zero Hour on the 22nd anniversary of the parliament attacks when two individuals, identified as Sagar Sharma and Manoranjan D, leaped from the visitors’ gallery into the Lok Sabha chamber.

The intruders, who managed to chant slogans and spray a yellow gas from a canister before being subdued by Members of Parliament, have since been identified and arrested. In addition to this breach, a man and a woman named Anmol Shinde and Neelam Azad raised slogans outside the parliament at the same time.

The decision to launch an inquiry was announced by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in response to a request from the Lok Sabha Secretariat. The Enquiry Committee, led by DG CRPF Anish Dayal Singh, will comprise members from various security agencies and experts.

The committee’s mandate includes investigating the reasons behind the breach in parliament security, identifying lapses, and recommending further actions to prevent such incidents. The home ministry emphasized that the committee will expedite its inquiry, with the goal of submitting a comprehensive report containing recommendations, including measures to enhance parliamentary security.

The parliament secretariat had earlier communicated with the MHA, urging a thorough security review and a high-level inquiry into the breach. The incident raised concerns among opposition MPs, with some demanding an explanation from Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Allegations were made regarding inadequate security arrangements in the new Parliament building, prompting calls for immediate attention to address potential vulnerabilities.

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor expressed the gravity of the situation, highlighting that while the breach did not result in significant damage, the potential for more serious consequences necessitates a detailed examination of security lapses and arrangements. The unfolding investigation will likely shed light on the circumstances surrounding the breach and contribute to improvements in parliamentary security measures.
