Bhutan’s Department of Tourism is pleased to announce the commencement of its vibrant festive season, showcasing the rich tapestry of Bhutan’s cultural magnificence and spiritual celebrations. From enchanting dances that bring ancient myths to life to melodious rhythms echoing through the kingdom’s mountains, these festivals offer a unique window into the heart and soul of Bhutan. This season features seven marquee festivals, including the Black Necked Crane Festival, Bhutan Bird Festival, Druk Wangyel Tshechu, Punakha Dromche Punakha Tshechu, Paro Tshechu, and the Rhododendron Festival.

1. Black Necked Crane Festival – November 11, 2023

  • Celebrates the return of black-necked cranes to Bhutan.
  • Features mesmerizing mask dances, cultural performances, and homage to the Black-Necked cranes.

2. Bhutan Bird Festival – November 13-15, 2023

  • Promotes birding and eco-tourism in Tingtibi, Bhutan’s eco-tourism capital.
  • Offers cultural programs, drawing competitions, traditional games, hiking, hot-spring baths, and fishing.

3. Druk Wangyel Tshechu – December 13, 2023

  • Takes place at Dochula mountain pass with a backdrop of the Himalayan mountains.
  • Showcases sacred dances retelling the bravery and sacrifices of the Royal Bhutan Army.

4. Punakha Dromche – February 16-18, 2024

  • Dramatically reenacts a 17th-century battle against the Tibetan army.
  • Features unique dances, immersion of relics, and cultural festivities.

5. Punakha Tshechu – February 19-21, 2024

  • Presents various mask dances, traditional folk dances, and a vibrant cultural atmosphere.

6. Paro Tshechu – March 21-25, 2024

  • Held at Rinpung Dzong in Paro, near Bhutan’s only international airport.

7. Rhododendron Festival – April 13-14, 2024

  • Celebrates the rich flora, culture, and food of Bhutan.
  • Showcases various blooming rhododendron species and raises awareness about climate change and environmental conservation.

For nature enthusiasts, the Rhododendron Festival offers the opportunity to explore the stunning Lungchutse hiking trail, surrounded by rhododendron flowers in full bloom. The Royal Botanical Park in Lamperi houses many of these species.
