16 Crew  Members Went Missing… Coast of Oman

A Comoros-flagged oil tanker, the ‘Prestige Falcon’, has capsized off Oman’s coast, leading to the disappearance of all 16 crew members, including 13 Indians and three Sri Lankans.

The vessel sank a day prior to being reported by Oman’s maritime security center on Tuesday.

Currently, the ship remains submerged and overturned near Duqm, Oman’s industrial port, with uncertainties about its stability and potential oil leaks yet to be confirmed.

The 117-meter-long tanker, built in 2007, was on its way to Yemen’s Aden port when the incident occurred, typical for its use in shorter coastal voyages. Omani authorities, in collaboration with maritime agencies, have initiated a search-and-rescue operation, but no survivors have been found as of now.

The tanker overturned approximately 25 nautical miles southeast of Ras Madrakah, close to Duqm port.

Duqm port, strategically located on Oman’s southwest coast, is integral to major oil and gas projects, including a significant refinery within Duqm’s extensive industrial zone—the nation’s largest economic endeavor. Authorities continue efforts to manage the aftermath and assess environmental risks posed by the capsized vessel.
